I was with you up to this last sentence: "...you've built a thinking machine...". No, as you described it, all you've built is a sifting and sorting machine with "...no awareness of what any word means...".

But is this accurate? How does any of us know what words "mean" or what concepts they imply other than their structured associations to each other? What sort of "thinking" do we actually do with these words and concepts?

At last! Thank you Dan for speaking to the many readers who selected other professions--not technology, for our contributions to society. My first job after college graduation with a journalism degree was technical writer. It was a steep learning curve and a national association of technical writers all helped me learn how to describe something you assume but it not known. Start with describing an apple and remember that nobody but you has ever experienced an apple.
That is how I know that this piece by Nir is entirely possible and necessary.

An excellent piece that helps beginners visualize and understand how LLMs work. Love the idea of using meals as metaphors. Really well done, Nir!
